It's not 10,000 horsepower... the numbers are completely exaggerated. There isn't a top fuel engine in the world that could stay together long enough to accurately read that much power. Saying it has '10,000' HP is a complete joke.

It's probably more.

To think that it takes 1,000 horsepower to turn the blower.

Things I love about these creatures:
- This engine has around 60 seconds on this block. About 5 runs, counting the burnouts. This means it'll be replaced because it's too old.

...and they rebuild the engine after every run !

Oh, no doubt at all, the sheer amount of air these things consume is terrifying.

The real secret is nitromethane, which keeps all of that air (like, something stupid around 4000cfm) cool. It used to be that nitromethane cost only a little more than regular gas, and you could buy it at airports. Heat kills engines, and its the limiting factor. Remove heat, and numbers like this suddenly become real.

Nowadays the best we have is E85.

Yip!

Just amazing.

But what makes it amazing, also makes it a bummer, because just like F1 and some others, these are cars that need a whole team to make it roll from a few seconds to a whole race. There is no "just a spin for a show". I know these are cars for specific uses and one could never think of them as regular vehicles. But it's kind of sad. Every second costs a lot of money and preparation. The car must placed exactly on the track, everything must be secure and calibrated at that very moment for those exact conditions. Quick drive for a few seconds then back to the garage, check the computers, heat the tires, replace parts.

I have always wondered what a slightly detuned and regeared Funny Car would do at Bonnevile, if they can pull off 300mph in 1000 feet, what could they hit on the 5 mile stretch?

About 350mph.

It has nothing to do with engine power at that point, it has to do with aero and wheels. Those giant rear wheels have too much resistance against the ground and air to allow them to go much faster. The fastest piston-powered car goes 450mph, and it only has 2000hp, which is possible with any properly-built (but extremely expensive) twin turbo big block on jet fuel:

Acceleration needs power, but top speed is about avoiding resistance.

Here's a video I recorded Sunday morning at the NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals of a top fuel warm up. One of the great things about drag racing is getting this close to the cars in the pits.
